I must confess that I did not really read that magazine- I received a copy despite the fact that I had resigned some months before - and was not pleased to see a picture of me in the magazine.
If there was a sealed bid auction then members surely are entitled to know what the results were? Or has the same happened to other items donated in the past?

Some exmembers have received several copies apparently and many were given away at the CLA - no doubt to reinforce the illusion that they have 9000 members!

Now it seems that there will be parts of the NOBS Forum which will not be accessible to non members of NOBS, will this result in more saying "Blow it"?

Now it seems - nearly halfway through January - that the lock down they threatened has not happened "due to technical problems"!!!!!
Saving grace is that I believe no actual date was given just from "January 2009" and a warning that "in a few couple of weeks" the last being late december 2008.
A few couple of weeks could be 4-6+ weeks so it may yet happen.
Probably have to spend more members subs on IT advice!!

Well, thank goodness many of us were wary and moved away!

I've run businesses for over 30 years and early in my business life  developed a 'suspicious' nose, as I found that so many business people are as bent as nine-bob notes (though the Govt' doesn't seem to give a toss!) and in general people seem to be just out for themselves and really couldn't give a monkeys about others!   They just tread them into the earth!

NOBS concerned me, as it did a number of other members who contacted me early on in NOBS' life.  To me, it seemed to be more concerned with the commercial aspects rather than the placement of beaters etc.

I'm glad that suspicions have been raised .... because although I endorse the NOBS original ethos, it seems to me that it has totally lost track, or has been misrepresenting its true status and aims.

I hope that PuBS continues to offer a very good, free service to all and sundry ... in which case I shall continue to give it my full support!

Just found this site and must say I echo your views, saw this coming a long time ago, asked many questions and had many posts deleted.
Not only was I put down by the organisation but also by many members who for whatever reason no longer seem to be with them. I wonder why?
What for me was a good and simple idea is being ruined by not so good and simple minds.

the Forum shutdown to paid up members seems to have occured, but I hear that some posts by non paid up members are appearing so presumably the restrictions are not effective - yet more customers' (they cannot be members as it is a private limited company with a Board of Directors) money will have to be spent on IT.

The shutdown is supposed to stop pms and emails from so called trolls, or malcontents as perceived by some of their mods, which were deemed abusive.
Strange as I continually hear of ems and pms from their admin to members which are exactly that!
seems that some of their Mods actually ARE abusive in open forum when awkward questions are asked, and one Regional Officer seems to have a jaundiced and very biased view of one ex nob in particular and continually makes quite spiteful posts.
he is entitled to his opinions of course but posting such remarks in open forum must create the wrong impression in new members minds and also doubts, small mindedness always does.

Couldn't agree more, Gerry ... and welcome to the forum!   To me, it's a shame that the press still seems to regard NOBS as such a wonderful, fulfilling organisation - when that no longer appears to be the case.

Early on NOBS  had my full support ... but not for some time now.

Those who still regard NOBS as being a good organisation, fine - we all have different views.  Personally, I will not return to it and regret the free advertising I gave it in the early days .... it cost me a fair amount and at the time I was happy to part with it to help a 'helping' organisation .... but a few months later all that changed.

I have no personal  issues with anyone on the NOBS board or the NOBS membership, but it is no longer an organisation that I want to belong to.  Instead, I hope that PuBS grows and continues to provide a free and friendly service, without removing controversial posts.  Though as most of the controversial posts on NOBS seemed to relate to the organisation itself and PuBS does not have such issues, I really don't see that as a problem.

Long live freedom of speech .... and long live the freedom of PuBS!

Stickler

Was a County rep with NOBs since 2005 and did more than my bit, recently I noticed that I was still listed as a county rep but unable to access certain parts nor was I able to post. I assume that this is because I have not paid my fiver which I will never do.
I stated that I thought it out of order that those who are expected to promote NOBs, and I know a few who have worked their butts off, should be expected to pay to promote NOBs and to access the site. The reply was basically Tough, everybody pays.
Fair enough but as far as I am concerned I shall have no further NOBs members on or near my shoot. I have heard of a few shoots who will not allow beaters etc. on their shoot unless a member of NOBs, It's getting a bit like a trade union and the divide is starting.

There was a lot af antipathy from shoots when NOBS was first formed for that very reason- it was visualised as a trade union for beaters and may have sought extra pay for them in the furure.
Shoots restricting themselves to only using NOBS members will soon find themselves in trouble - i suspect that they are those where NOBS members have a hand in running the shoot.
I have been to many different shoots, both commercial and family style, and met many keepers and shoot captains whilst trying to publicise PuBS and despite the differences in size and operation the common theme is disappointment in how NOBS operates, frequently stated in a succinct manner!!!
One keeper has paid for two seasons and his main complaint is that i was the only one from NOBS he got via NOBS itself!!!We all have a cross to bear!!!
I actually got him two extra beaters, within minutes of them joining PuBS.
