I too, was rather taken aback with the choice of President. I can see the reasons behind it when the company 1st started, he was a high-profile supporter of field sports etc etc.

However, the actual input from said chap was minimal to say the least. As for the current band of Directors, I would guess that as there is only 1 shareholder, it is he/she who has the authority to apoint /remove directors. The fee-paying "members" are, by all accounts, no more than "customers" of the Company and it's business.

This is the (important) difference between NOB's and say the BASC.

NOB's is a Limited Company trying to portray itself as a charity. As such, it is out to make a proffit (as many charitys do) It does this in a number of ways, the most obvious being the .org in its address.

I know of few other companies that activley seek sponsership to generate funds for operation. I would hazzard a guess that sponsership is regarded as Commercial Advertising, but called sponsership to avoid a tax liability on profit from commercial activity.

I can relate the difference even further and in an easy form to demonstrate the above points:

A Yacht Club may not be a charity but a commercial enterprise, with paid staff and fee-paying members. However, the fee paying members are responsible for and have a duty to, elect a Management Committee (Flag Officers etc) who will run the club on behalf of the membership. The Club employs a number of staff who are resposible for the day-to-day operation of the business, but only under the direction of the policy laid down by the current committee.

NOB's is a commercial enterprise, who's aim is to make a profit. They charge "members" to use the forum as a portal for gaining work. The board of directors is not responsible to its members as its members are customers and therfore have no say in the operation or election of the directors or how the business is run.

The whole thing is very cunning.  Using 'National' and 'Organisation' in its title definitely gives the whole thing kudos and weight, and people just gullibly accept that it is an altruistic membership body.

It's not, and they should stop pretending it is.  It is just a business with commercial interests.
